Customs Requirements
Every returning Resident coming back with goods is required to have the following:
1. A valid passport
2. Bill of Lading or Airway bill
3. Packing list
There are some items that are not accepted into the country by the Government of Kenya. For such items, Customs will either return them back to the country of origin at the shippers cost or destroy them completely.
As a returning resident, one can return with their household possessions, depending on what possessions one has and the value. One can ship almost anything and everything, but one needs to ensure that the goods are packed well. There are different freight companies specializing in transportation of different types of goods. Goods can either be sent by air or by sea depending on the nature and weight.
The costs that you will incur are:
- Shipping costs from origin to Kenya - Paid to your shipping agent.
- Shipping line charges in Kenya.
- Kenya Ports Authority charges - for storage and handling of goods.
- Clearing charges - paid to your clearing agent.
- Delivery charges - transport and offloading charges at destination.
For the costs back home, these can only be calculated once the goods have arrived in the country.
