Goods being imported into the country have to conform to the Kenya government rules and regulations on acceptable goods coming into the country.
Requirements for Imports
- Proforma Invoice to enable appliation of an Import Declaration Form (IDF). For any goods that are coming into the country, an IDF is required to declare the goods and their value.
- Application for an IDF, done before the goods come into the country and requires an upfront fee of Kshs 5,000.
- Individual or Company Pin Number.
- Original an copies of invoice, packing list, airway bill for the goods.
Most imports are also subject to inspection for compliance with the international bureau standards. Goods are inspected from country of origin before they are shipped. If a shipment is shipped without inspection, the Kenya Bureau of Standards charges a fine of 15% of the CIF value of the goods. There is a standard procedure for inspection of goods and inspection is only carried out by internationally credited inspection bodies, namely SGS and Intertek, in the respective country of origin. Once inspection is complete, the inspection body issues a Certificate of Conformity which is sent together with the goods. For more information on inspection please contact us. |
